Mining Engineering

Newmont Mining recently announced that it will pour from $1 billion to $2 billion into new projects and expansion of existing projects during the next year. One of those projects that will be expanded is the company's Ahafo gold mine in Ghana. Ghana is one of the regions that Newmont believes holds great potential for gold production. The April issue of Mining Engineering includes an update to the mine's current operations and plans for its future.

Also in April, Northern Dynasty Mines' provides an update on the status of its Pebble copper and gold project in Alaska. Once operational, this world class deposit could alleviate about a third of the current copper shortfall in the United States. The proposed mine would also be a major boon to southwestern Alaska's economy.

The inaugural issue of "Tunneling & Underground Construction Magazine" is online at the SME Web site: http://www.smenet.org/tuc You must be logged in to view more than the first 2 pages. Included is an overview of European tunneling projects and technology. And the Tunnel Demand Forecast is online and will be continually updated for UCA of SME members. In addition, the June issue of T&UC will be available at the Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, June 10-13. The editors of T&UC are interested in hearing from UCA of SME members about how they would like to see the magazine cover. This can be anything from feature article ideas to industry news items, issues facing the underground construction industry and personal items, like job changes or promotions, upcoming conferences within the industry, or company profiles.
