SME To Cosponsor The "5th Annual Engineering R&D Symposium"
The Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration, Inc. (SME) will be joining with leaders from the engineering community to co-sponsor the "5th Annual Engineering R&D Symposium" on May 8th, 2007 in Washington, DC. Over twenty engineering organizations will co-sponsor the Symposium to gain firsthand knowledge of the R&D priorities and the potential impact of the President's fiscal year 2008 budget request on the engineering, science and technology community.

Engineers play a critical role in the public policy process, providing expertise and knowledge regarding research and technology issues facing the nation. The Symposium will feature representatives from government, industry, and academia, who will discuss innovation, U.S. competitiveness, research and development, and the state of the U.S. engineering enterprise. Registration is limited. Additional information is available at:

Mining Engineering

Global mining and exploration activity during 2006 continued to be strong. So much so that many industry watchers believe this current boom is sustainable. The May issue of Mining Engineering includes the annual review of mining activity during 2006. Coverage includes the U.S. Geological Survey's roundup of mining and exploration activity throughout the world last year, as well as the U.S. Energy Information Administration's review of global coal activity. And minerals output in the United States remained strong last year. The annual review also includes summaries of mining and exploration activity in 20 key mining states.

The June issue of ME features the annual review of industrial minerals activity throughout 2006. Like metals and coal, production in this sector showed gains in nearly every of the 40 commodities covered. Leading the way was any commodity that had anything to do with construction, oil and gas drilling and steelmaking. The June issue also includes highlights from the SME Annual Meeting in Denver in February, including a recap of the society's 50th anniversary dinner put on by the SME Foundation.

Tunneling & Underground Construction. The second issue of T&UC will be published in June and will be available at the RETC in Toronto. Feature material in the June will include an article on ground freezing in underground mines and another about the Brighton underground water conveyance project in Seattle. In addition, Harvey Parker is writing an article explaining the benefits of the International Tunneling Association to UCA of SME members.

A staple of T&UC is the Tunnel Demand Forecast. In addition to being published in the magazine each issue, the TDF is also in the members-only part of the UCA of SME's Website http://uca.smenet.org and is continuously updated. The online version now allows users to submit entries of their own.

Interested In Health And Safety?

The 2006 edition of the Transactions of SME, Vol. 320, contains numerous papers on health and safety issues.

The following is an abstract of a paper available only in this volume:

Survey of respirator use in the U.S. mining industry
Abstract: The need for improved respirator programs and a lack of information about respirator use led NIOSH and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) to conduct a survey of the respirator use and practices of U.S. industrial employers in 2001-2002. The survey revealed that the "mining" industry (including the "oil and gas extraction" industry) had the second highest percentage of establishments (12%) and the highest percentage of employees (10%) that were required to use respirators (required either by the employers or by federal regulation). The respirator use and practices reported by mining establishments often fall short of American National Standards Institute Inc. (ANSI) and NIOSH recommendations for respiratory protection (ANSI, 1969; NIOSH, 1987, 2005). The most common indicators of potentially inadequate respiratory protection programs within the mining industry, based on this data, are those reflecting a lack of written respirator program elements.
The 2006 Transactions of SME contains all of the technical papers published in 2006 by the Society. In addition to all the technical papers that were published in Mining Engineering and Minerals and Metallurgical Processing, the book also contains 24 additional peer-reviewed and approved papers that are available only in this volume.

At only $129 for SME members ($109 for student members), this archival collection is a must reference book on every engineer's bookshelf. To order, call SME Customer Service at 1-800-763-3132.
