The August issue should not be missed. Included will be a special invited feature titled "Semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill liner design and development," by D. Royston, Principal, Royston Process Technology Pty Ltd., Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In addition, the issue will contain the following paper titles:

  • "Multi-gravity separator: an alternate gravity concentrator to process coal fines,"
  • "Effect of microwave treatment on the flotation and magnetic separation properties of pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite,"
  • "Presentation of particle beneficiation test results on an equal basis when yield and recovery are involved,"
  • "Enhancement of bacterial iron and sulfate respiration for in situ bioremediation of acid mine drainage sites: a case study,"
  • "Preventive maintenance policy supported by a quality control chart and Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests: Emet Colemanite Mineral Processing Plant, Turkey,"
  • "Model and experimental study of the effect of impeller rotational speed on the flotation rate from a small-scale flotation cell - implications for the effect of bubble velocity,"
  • "Removal of cadmium from raw indium by physical and chemical methods" and
  • "Gyratory crusher model and impact parameters related to energy consumption."
This international peer-reviewed journal is published quarterly in February, May, August and November. Subscribe today and receive all four 2007 issues. Annual subscription rates are much lower than competitive journals - only $95 for SME members ($129 for nonmembers).

Syd S. Peng Ground Control in Mining Award
Nominations due: August 15, 2007
Nominations are being accepted for the Syd S. Peng Ground Control in Mining Award. The Peng Award recognizes individuals that have demonstrated technical and scientific excellence in advancing the understanding of ground control technologies or approaches by either publication or direct applications in the mining industry. The annual award will be given to an individual or a group that: (1) has shown insight and understanding of ground control issues by developing concepts, theories or technologies that have been adopted by the mining community, or (2) has successfully implemented a ground control design or designs or practices. The award will be available to individuals/groups that have made such contributions to ground control related to coal and/or non-coal (metals, commodities, etc) or aggregate mines.

The selection committee shall consider (but not be limited by) the following criteria:
  • Publication record in the field of ground control in mining.
  • Acceptance of applicant's research findings by the mining industry in the form of a case study or studies.
  • Demonstrated recognition of applicant by previous activities in the field of mining engineering related to ground control issues.
  • Membership in SME (non SME members will be considered during the reviewing process. Once selected, he/she will be asked to join SME with the first year membership fee paid by this endowment).

At the exhibit, teachers are exposed to the fact that minerals are essential to modern society. Mining professionals are present to distribute mineral specimens and literature and, most importantly, to engage in one-on-one conversation with teachers. A workshop is also conducted by the Women in Mining Education Foundation to teach hands-on classroom activities. Door prizes are awarded to teachers throughout the 17 hours the exhibit is open.
