Mining Engineering

The 2007 SME Membership Directory is bound into the July issue of ME. The directory contains information for all SME members and is a valuable year-round resource. The July issue also spotlights molybdenum. Once languishing in the $3/lb range, moly is now hovering between $25/lb and $30/lb. But how long will it last and can producers keep up with demand?

Young Leaders Committee
Friends, Romans, SME members - lend me your ears. Or at least a few minutes of your precious time. I know we are in the midst of the busy season (generally accepted as the time between January 1 and December 31), but I am writing to make you aware of a survey the Young Leaders are conducting to help tailor the technical sessions we will be hosting at the 2008 Annual Meeting and beyond. As it currently stands, the Young Leaders will be presenting two separate technical sessions at the 2008 Salt Lake City meeting. The first session will contain presentations delivered by a few of the Young Leaders on a given topic. We would like your help in determining this topic. The intent of this session is to educate attendees on the basics of a specific area of the mining industry, such as Land Rights 101, Intro to Longwall Mining, De-watering for Dummies, etc. The theme will obviously have to be something the Young Leaders have a good handle on, but after that, it is fair game.

The second session will feature a speaker from outside the Young Leaders, as we have done on occasion in the past. We are surveying a few different speakers, and would appreciate your help in our evaluation of possible topics.

More details concerning the survey will be posted on the SME website: http://www.smenet.org and in E-News. We appreciate your timely response to this survey, as the sooner we can make our decisions on topics and speakers, the sooner we can start our preparation for the meeting. Thank you in advance!
