Western Museum of Mining & Industry presents: Simple Machines, Lego Steam Engines, and the Industrial Revolution
Motor on down to the Western Museum of Mining & Industry (WMMI) in Colorado Springs CO January 13th, 2007 at 1PM for hands-on experiments with levers, axels and wheels. Then see how they are put to use in working Lego Models and the giant steam engines of the Industrial Revolution! Use different classes of levers, lift loads with pulleys, roll around wheels... you'll have so much fun and never realize we put you to work. Watch our 37 ton, giant of a steam engine come to life and then compare it to a scale, operating model made entirely from Lego's. As this event revolves around the history of the Industrial Revolution, you will learn how simple machines become the compound machines we use to generate power! Please RSVP at: 719-488-0880.

Mining Engineering

Dry jigging coal has several advantages. Particulate emissions are nearly nonexistent because of the dust collectors installed at modern dry jig plants. Dry jigging is also a good way to go at mines with limited water resources. And technological advances have made these plants more efficient. However, this technology is not suitable for every application. Richard Weinstein and Richard Snoby explain in the January issue of Mining Engineering Magazine.

Also in the January issue, Stephen Bessinger, T. Arthur Palm and Alan Zeni discuss the installation a new ventilation shaft at San Juan Coal Co.'s underground mine near Farmington, NM. The coal seam at the mine had a propensity for spontaneous combustion. So the company examined several different shaft sinking technologies and decided blind drilling was the best.

And the January issue contains the Pre-show Guide to the SME Annual Meeting and Exhibit, Feb. 25-28, in Denver, CO. In addition to a calendar of events, the Showguide contains technical programming, and exhibitor list and exhibit floor map, and registration and hotel information.
