Interested In Health And Safety?

The 2006 edition of the Transactions of SME, Vol. 320, contains numerous papers on health and safety issues.

The following is an abstract of a paper available only in this volume:

Survey of respirator use in the U.S. mining industry Abstract: The need for improved respirator programs and a lack of information about respirator use led NIOSH and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) to conduct a survey of the respirator use and practices of U.S. industrial employers in 2001-2002. The survey revealed that the "mining" industry (including the "oil and gas extraction" industry) had the second highest percentage of establishments (12%) and the highest percentage of employees (10%) that were required to use respirators (required either by the employers or by federal regulation). The respirator use and practices reported by mining establishments often fall short of American National Standards Institute Inc. (ANSI) and NIOSH recommendations for respiratory protection (ANSI, 1969; NIOSH, 1987, 2005). The most common indicators of potentially inadequate respiratory protection programs within the mining industry, based on this data, are those reflecting a lack of written respirator program elements.
The 2006 Transactions of SME contains all of the technical papers published in 2006 by the Society. In addition to all the technical papers that were published in Mining Engineering and Minerals and Metallurgical Processing, the book also contains 24 additional peer-reviewed and approved papers that are available only in this volume.

At only $129 for SME members ($109 for student members), this archival collection is a must reference book on every engineer's bookshelf. To order, call SME Customer Service at 1-800-763-3132.

SME To Cosponsor The "5th Annual Engineering R&D Symposium"
The Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration, Inc. (SME) will be joining with leaders from the engineering community to co-sponsor the "5th Annual Engineering R&D Symposium" on May 8th, 2007 in Washington, DC. Over twenty engineering organizations will co-sponsor the Symposium to gain firsthand knowledge of the R&D priorities and the potential impact of the President's fiscal year 2008 budget request on the engineering, science and technology community.

Engineers play a critical role in the public policy process, providing expertise and knowledge regarding research and technology issues facing the nation. The Symposium will feature representatives from government, industry, and academia, who will discuss innovation, U.S. competitiveness, research and development, and the state of the U.S. engineering enterprise. Registration is limited. Additional information is available at:

Mining Engineering

The inaugural issue of Tunneling & Underground Construction Magazine, the official publication of the UCA of SME, was published in March. Inside is a discussion of European tunneling projects, equipment and techniques, many of which are making their way to the North American underground construction industry. Highlights from the George A. Fox conference in New York are also presented. In addition, T&UC features the Tunnel Demand Forecast, which provides a list of underground construction projects in the United States and their current status.

T&UC is also available online for UCA of SME and SME members at: http://www.smenet.org/uca. Members will also be able to view updated versions of the Tunnel Demand Forecast online. T&UC will be published quarterly in March, June, September and December. The new magazine will be bound into those issues of Mining Engineering Magazine. And UCA of SME members will receive a separate copy.

2006 was another good year for the global mining industry. And the industry appears to be headed for another good one in 2007. The May issue of Mining Engineering features its Annual Review of the mining industry during 2006. The U.S. Geological Survey reports that demand from places like China has kept demand high for minerals throughout the world, especially metals and construction materials. However, high energy prices cut into profits and continued to put pressure on companies to lower costs. Strong demand for metals also allowed many mining companies to increase their exploration expenditures during 2006 and into 2007. And coal production and demand in the United States continued to its increase during the year. The Annual Review also reports the 2006 results from selected states.
