Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration and its Partners Champion Engineering Workforce Solutions

As world consumption of materials increases mineral industry retirements are skyrocketing, enrollment in university programs is in decline and program funding is shrinking. Only 85 people graduated with bachelor’s degrees in Mining Engineering in 2004 in the United States. Estimates are that at least 300 graduates alone are needed each year for the next 12 years to fill available positions.

The Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME) and its partners are bringing together key stakeholders to act as champions and focus their time and talent identifying and developing actionable plans to address the growing engineering workforce crisis.

Leadership Mining Forum: Engineering Workforce Solutions will be held June 25-27, 2006, Stein Eriksen Lodge, Park City, Utah. This forum will address current employment trends and how industry addresses imminent shortages of trained personnel as retirement and other challenges.

Industry executives and professionals from engineering houses, industrial mineral suppliers, government, academia, aggregates, metals mining and more will come together to accomplish the following: identify critical areas for change, build capacity in the industry and in educational institution to accomplish sustainability goals for tomorrow workforce and create paths forward to implement necessary changes.

Speakers include representatives from Colorado School of Mines, Rio Tinto, Albania Oil Sands, Kennecott, Granite Construction, University of Nevada, Reno, Newmont Gold, Phelps Dodge Copper Co., Caterpillar, and more.
