NEWS RELEASEFebruary 21, 2006AUA and SME SIGN HISTORIC AGREEMENT TO BETTER SERVE THE UNDERGROUND CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRYThe Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration is pleased to announce the formation of the Underground Construction Association of SME Committee. The committee was formed at the request of the former AUA members to better serve the underground construction industry. The resulting Underground Construction Association of SME committee (UCA of SME) will be the primary source for industry information, professional development, education, and networking for those involved in underground construction."This is a win-win situation for both organizations. There is amazing synergy between the two", says AUA President Tom Peyton. SME President Barb Filas adds, "This adds a new dimension to SME and with the new UCA of SME we will be a stronger organization while enhancing our volunteer efforts". UCA of SME is an organization of professionals involved in the planning, design, development, construction and use of underground facilities. UCA of SME serves its members as a clearinghouse on underground facilities and related issues, networking. In the near future UCA of SME will formally request to be the official United States Member-Nation Representative to the International Tunneling Association. SME is the world's largest society of mineral professionals. SME advances the worldwide mining and minerals community through information exchange and professional development. SME organizes is the Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC and has a body of members involved in its mechanical mining area. SME also features numerous publications, programs, courses and conferences related to the underground industry. The integration of these two organizations establishes an influential body of practicing professionals to advance the underground industry while providing critical information and professional development to all individuals interested in underground construction and tunneling. The UCA of SME will continue to produce the best professional products available to the industry through its publications, the George A Fox Conference, The North American Tunneling conference, and The North American Tunnel Demand Forecast. Additionally members will have the complete access to all SME products and services including the RETC, Mining Engineering magazine, SME short courses and topical conferences, more than 100 other publications and proceedings, web and career services, and much more. The volunteers provide critical industry and technical knowledge to provide premier educational and professional development opportunities for practitioners across the globe. SME is a global network of more than 11,000 professionals along with all their expertise. The UCA of SME a powerful force in the underground business. |
